The Book of Mormon's "Narrow Neck" and Mesoamerica

This page is still under construction. We welcome any suggestions for improving the content of this FAIR Answers Wiki page.

Summary: Neither FAIR nor The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints takes any official position regarding where the Book of Mormon took place. That said, most scholars of the Book of Mormon that believe in its divine origins believe that it took place in the crescent known as Mesoamerica comprising Mexico's southern area and much of Central America. There have been two broad problems that have been posed for this setting. The first is that the layout of Mesoamerica does not comport with Book of Mormon directionality. We have responded to this charge on another page on the wiki. The other problem is that Mesoamerica does not seem to have a "narrow neck of land" dividing its southern and northern parts as the Book of Mormon's geography seems to require. While the FAIR Wiki will not be devoted to defending every aspect of the Mesoamerican setting, the editors have felt it important to at least defend the basic contours of the theory such that students of the Book of Mormon and other interested parties will be motivated to looking into it rather than dismissing it on shallower grounds such as these.
